Convert PDF pages to JPG or PNG

Updated September 2026 · Turn a page into an image when a form, chat app, or website will not take a PDF — without wrecking type or exporting an entire book by mistake.

A PDF can contain real text, vectors, and images. JPG and PNG are pictures of a page. Once you export, you generally cannot search, copy a sentence cleanly, or reflow the layout. If you needed an editable document, use the PDF to Word checklist instead.

When an image is the right output

Do not convert a 40-page packet to 40 photographs “just in case.” Extract the page you need first (split / extract steps), then export that page. Keeping the PDF is still the right archive.

JPG vs PNG

If the destination is a website that will compress again, start from a reasonably sized PNG or a high-quality JPG so the second pass has something left to work with. There is no universal “best quality percent,” and we do not invent one.

Prepare the page first

  1. Open the PDF and note the viewer page number, not only the number printed on the paper.
  2. Rotate the page if it is sideways. Exporting a rotated page as an image often bakes in the wrong orientation.
  3. If the file is password-protected, open it with a password you already know. We do not cover bypassing locks. If you are the one adding a lock, that is a separate job: password-protect a PDF.
  4. Crop in the PDF app only if you want the image cropped the same way. A screenshot of a zoomed window is a different, usually worse, crop.

Mac (Preview)

  1. Open the PDF in Preview and go to the page you want.
  2. File → Export. Choose PNG or JPEG. If you only see Export as PDF, use File → Export and change the format menu.
  3. For one page of a multi-page PDF, extract that page first (drag its thumbnail to the desktop), then export the new one-page file. Exporting the whole document can give you one image of page 1 only, or a pile of files, depending on the macOS version — check the output folder.
  4. Resolution: start at 150–200 pixels per inch for screen; use 300 if the image will be printed small. Higher is not free: a 600 dpi export of a letter page is a huge bitmap.
  5. Open the image in Preview at 100% and read a line of body text.

Screenshot (Shift-Command-4) is a last resort. It captures screen pixels, so a small Preview window produces a soft, low-resolution picture even if the PDF was sharp.

Windows

There is no single built-in “PDF to PNG” button in File Explorer. Practical options:

  1. PDF app export. If your reader has Export, Save as image, or Convert pages to JPEG/PNG, use that and set a resolution. This is the cleanest path.
  2. One page via Snipping Tool. Open the page at a large window size, snip the page area, save as PNG. Fine for a one-off; easy to clip margins or include the desktop.
  3. Microsoft Word / PowerPoint. Insert the PDF or a screenshot, then export the slide or page as an image only when you already live in Office. Layout may not match the PDF.
  4. Do not use Microsoft Print to PDF for this job. That creates another PDF, not a JPG.

If you need every page as an image, use a desktop exporter that names files document-001.png, document-002.png, and confirm the count matches the PDF. Online “burst to ZIP” tools are the usual alternative for non-sensitive files.

Convenient, and they see the whole file. Use them only for pages you would be willing to email to a stranger. Check whether they:

Download the ZIP or images, then delete the local copy of anything sensitive you should not have uploaded in the first place.
